Put some respect on my body!
"If Kim Kardashian can't escape this, then what chance do normal women have?" -Trevor Noah.
One in three women worldwide has experienced some form of violence or harassment. Yesterday, a man touched my bum on a pavement in the heart of CBD! For the first time in years, I felt powerless. How can someone have that much entitlement over my body? The group walked away with a smack wide-grin-of-victory plastered on their faces.
I had two options, either confronting these men and probably getting assaulted or walking away. I walked away with disgust and resentment because it felt safer. "It's never their fault anyway, right. It is always how we dress, act or walk?"
It is deeply disturbing that this pervasive behaviour against women is appropriated, it is somehow a "social norm". You cannot walk freely or interact online without your looks being judged, bullied or slut shamed. And when you react you are either "seeking attention or the angry black women..." How convenient!!!
Kanye West was recently banned from Instagram after violating hate speech and bullying policies. That's a loud and bold statement that we are going somewhere, not sure where but it is somewhere, right? It takes me to Trevor Noah's commentary on Kim and Kanye West's situation. Trevor brought to light that no matter how much power you may acquire, women are still at risk, and we can still be prey.
"This has surpassed being JUST a juicy tabloid story, this is a reality for women."
There are a few apples who use bad publicity for empathy and likes. I swear this will be the death of many. The spirit of pick-me. However, does it mean those negative comments and name-calling is not harassment to them? NO. Yes, they are a different breed, but we cannot appropriate it. Once we normalise it we will slowly fall into the habit of generalising it to every woman.
"Two things can be true. Kim like publicity, Kim is also being harassed. Those things can be happening at the same time." - Trevor Noah
If we look at the stories there are so many alarming matters to be addressed. For one the danger women face when they want to leave their partners, a possibility of how far someone can go just for publicity, how mental health is being the answer to bad behaviour, also people triggering Kanye knowing he has mental health so he can react and the importance of counselling.
Can we give him a free pass because he has mental health problems?
Two wrongs will not make it right. Well, in this case, the wrongs are alarming. What Kanye is doing to Kim is wrong but also Pete triggering him ain't right in my books either. You cannot disturb a swarm of bees and expect them not to react, they will sting the life out of you.
You're God's craftsman and so believe in yourself
ReplyDeleteThank you Sam🌻😊
DeleteWell you do raise a lot of valid points here , but the root cause is our generation failing to rewrite history and redefine our culture .
ReplyDeleteGo browse Twitter space or IG right now and you will see 99% of women all possing half naked or in explicitly sexual postures , so that automatically appears to man as that's how all you guys want to be viewd as sex objects. Dance all you do is dance in sexual tones ,so in as much as we the guys are wrong ,how do you go correct that when it begins with you?
Half the times a lady is hackled in CBD for wearing a miniskirt it doesn't start with man its fellow women who make comments an stare drawing man's attention then things escalate
There are a lot of issues to be addressed and blame game. What is the way forward and how can we make our society safe?
