Wide Awake

Where art thou sleep?
Far away - beyond the reach
Counting on of no avail
Tick tock, tick tock
Restless mind irks

Soaked in deep thoughts
I can’t see you, walls of unsleeping thickens
Neither sign of dreams nor sleep
Heavy eyelids – the struggle persists
Once again you remain invincible

Even night has fallen asleep
Here I lie awake having a conversation 
with my imaginary friend
I stare into the distance
Greeting restlessness and over thinking
They now know me by name

Rendered vulnerable I had become 
With nothing but sleepless promises and pain
The ceiling had become my own cinema
A front row seat I had earned
Lights, camera, action!!!
 The night was ours

📷 Hulst Wilson It was a summer morning the smell of the fresh coffee brewing filled the air – the chill breeze and the scent of the clean-shaven glass. The shrieking clock slapped me back to reality, it was time to begin adulting. For so long I was living with my parents and feeding off them. The day has dawned for me to journey into a land of no hope – job hunting ! It had become known that jobs were for the privileged and the well-connected fellas. But this didn’t mess my mantra and optimism . What a shame everyone was caught up in the web of corruption and nepotism. Tick tock… The clock sang a song of hope. I had clothes bought specially for this day rather for the last time it came from my parents’ pension. I cleared my mind and the never-dying song of unemployment from my classmates and some from streams ahead. In my head, 8 o’clock was a date, a chance to be what I always dreamt of. 📸the.photographers.official  I’m a girl who has always been one of the guys, but also very much a girl; I don't really blend perfectly into either sides. Sounds familiar? Welcome to the club. I remember growing up, I would pick soccer or wrestling over playing with dolls. Hanging with the guys over girls. I still choose sweat pants and t-shirts over dresses. It’s apparently thought as unladylike in most parts of the world or rather a glorified brainwash to instil gender roles. After a couple of family interventions, a wardrobe revamp and shipping off to college I slowly embraced it. Because unfortunately the, ‘She will grow out of it’ seemed like it was never going to happen.
