Creatives Week: What's In The Name?

#WinterABC2021: What's in the name?

We are on Day 2 of the Afrobloggers winter writing challenge. It's Creatives Week! The first thing I asked myself is what are Creatives? Is it limited to extremists and artsy people like painters, photographers? Or is it any regular Joe who sees the world differently than others? Or is it just a lack of a better word because everyone else can create?

I took it to the streets and asked colleagues who create in their respective industries. Firstly, if they are creatives and what exactly do creatives do? A good question because some didn't even know what it meant. Here are some sentiments around the term CREATIVE:

Are you creative? What's your definition of a creative?

"I think I am creative and a creative is someone who comes up with ideas, solutions or even answers that help in telling a story or that help people achieve their goals. So creatives can be from game developers, managers, artists, inventors e.t.c."    - Prosper Kunyetu

"The term 'creative' actually low key gives me anxiety. I guess people use it because they are involved in multiple creative disciplines but I feel like you should just say what you are. E.g writer or at least say what type of creative you are. i.e. digital creative, musical creative etc lol 😂 don't know if that's viable. Anyway, yes. & I say this painfully yes I am creative (by society's standards). A creative is anyone who thinks and sees artistically. A creative express themselves, speaks for others or communicates through their work. It doesn't matter what type of are it is, it's all about expression and communication at the end of the day."    - Abigirl Mulilo

Why do we need creatives?

Although most had different views of the term CREATIVE, one thing for sure whether as an artist, content creator or someone with a wild imagination. YOU ARE VERY IMPORTANT... Here are some June validation and affirmations:

"They are explorative, go-getters, genius, bright and imaginative. Why do we need them? Because they perceive ideas in profound ways, provide solutions and reveal ideas"  - Shamiso Mpinyuri

"We need creatives to balance out all the madness and crisis in this world. Creativity is that little piece of happiness that you can always go back to." - Abigirl

"Creatives are catalysts of change and mindset shift, would we have changed the way we communicate if it wasn't for creatives who invented cellphones, the internet and smartphones? Would we enjoy TV if it wasn't for creatives who are out there creating content?" - Prosper

What an interesting conversation, feel free to continue the conversation in the comment section. Tomorrow you get to meet a phenomenon-al young lady, one of my favourite creators from Zimbabwe. It's goodbye, for now, till we pen again!
